Within each of us lives a legacy, a story waiting to be told. Stories, like wine, are meant to be shared.
Thomas Vineyard Estate is a family-owned business established in 1998 by Merv and I.
The passion for Shiraz and the desire to produce a full-bodied red wine under our own ‘Thomas’ label, crafted from the grapes grown in our own premium McLaren Vale vineyard, is our legacy to be shared.
‘Make mine a Thomas!’ – Dawne Thomas.
McLaren Vale, located approximately 45 minutes south of Adelaide, has an enviable reputation as being one of the foremost wine areas in Australia for growing the Shiraz grape.
The Thomas Vineyard is situated on the Fleurieu Peninsula and is three kilometres from the coast of the Gulf of St Vincent.
The close proximity to the ocean means the vineyard enjoys the climatic advantage of milder and quite unique weather patterns and no frosts during our winter months. It also provides a cooling sea breeze during the intensely hot summer which helps to avoid the sun burning the fruit. The weather conditions have proved to be ideal to achieve an early ripening period.
Our vintage history shows that we are one of the first Shiraz crops to be harvested in the region. Ideally the grapes should be picked in the coolness of the evening to avoid ‘bin fermentation’. They are transported and crushed in the winery as quickly as possible to maintain the tannins and fruit quality. This is important in the process of producing highly flavored wine with good length during the ageing process.
There are three criteria that make up our mission, ‘Consistency, Value and Reliability’ – the wine style maintaining its characteristic. The ability to adhere to this mission was firstly to find suitable land, which encourages excellent nutrients, for Shiraz grapevines to flourish and develop. The land and soil structure, which we felt had these, is commonly known as ‘Bay of Biscay’. This soil is known as ‘reactive’ and has the consistency of clay when wet and surface cracking when dry, it also has a limestone sub soil structure.
The wine displays typical characters from this part of the region. It is full bodied yet beautifully balanced, has luscious rich fruit with layers of diverse flavours such as berries, plums, cinnamon and chocolate. These are all balanced by soft voluptuous tannins while the wine also displays great length.
Value can be guaranteed and competitively maintained, as all of the fruit is estate grown and not dependent on blending fruit which has been outsourced. Single vineyard supply also ensures, very importantly, the consistency and reliability in the finished product.
We believe that it is important to be totally in control of every aspect of the production of the wine, and the shipping of each order, from the ground to the glass, guaranteeing as much as possible a quality product for our loyal customers to enjoy. We feel that it is also very important to build and maintain a personal contact point with you the consumer so that we can be ever aware of your points of view.
